Will My Boss Find Out if I File for Bankruptcy?

In most cases, no, your employer won’t find out you’ve filed for bankruptcy.  Bankruptcy documents are public, however; if your boss wants to find out, he or she can.  You have to have an account with the website that has that information, but for a small fee, you can get it.

You do have to notify your employer if you owe your employer any money.  All debts must be listed, no exceptions.

Your employer will find out you’ve filed if you file a Chapter 13 and choose to have your monthly payment deducted by your employer’s payroll company.  You can choose to pay this amount yourself each month, but I generally recommend having it deducted from your paycheck so you don’t accidentally miss a payment.  Missing payments can cause your bankruptcy to be dismissed.
